Easy Does It - Al-Anon Meeting PoliciesSeptember 2006
A voluntary sign-in notebook is passed each week. A listing from our website of the Step\Slogan\Tradition\Topic next to the upcoming dates will is also passed around. Any member can sign up to prepare a short speech on the chosen topic or to volunteer to lead a future meeting. The contribution basket will be passed around at the beginning of the meeting, and then left on the literature table for latecomers and literature sales. After reading the opening, the chairperson will immediately ask if there are any newcomers, or any members who would like a first step. Newcomers will be offered an Orientation First Step meeting which can be shorter than the regular meeting. First Step meeting attendees may return to the regular meeting at the conclusion of their First Step meeting. The treasurer's report is given on the last week of the month, and lasts no longer than five minutes, with a ten minute limit for group discussion. The treasurer should forward the report to another attending member in the event of the treasurer's absence. Any voting will be done immediately following the discussion. The GR's report, and ISR's report is given after District Meetings, Assemblies, and Intergroup Meetings, lasting no longer than ten minutes. Group discussion and voting is treated the same as that following the treasurer's report. Old or New Business and announcements are kept to two minutes, with a five minute limit on discussion about Al-Anon, Alateen or AA. Announcements about personal matters or friends, movies, programs on alcoholism, should be announced or discussed before or after the meeting. Just for these 24 hours, let us keep this hour and one half for Al-Anon. Members are encouraged to take the responsibility for greeting new members. This welcome could be a smile and a friendly "Hello", a few words of hope, or any caring remark directed to a newcomer as they come in the door, sit next to you, or after the meeting. Before the group divides, we will state, "If there is any member who is hurting or needs to talk, please feel free to open the sharing after the group separates." That will allow each group more discussion time with less confusion. Individuals arriving after the groups have started are asked to speak last. When going around the circle, members announce their first name before commenting. It is suggested that there be no cross-talk until each member has had an opportunity to express him or herself. While holding elections, members will be encouraged to take on responsibilities in the belief that service plays a vital part in our individual recovery and growth. However, we always try to keep in mind that each member must be allowed to grow at their own speed. No member will be coerced or forced into taking an office they are not ready to accept. Terms may be for a period of three months. Election dates are listed in the Step / Topic / Tradition page listed on our website. A voluntary telephone list of members will be maintained and updated every six months. This list will also indicate people who are willing to be sponsors. The sign-in book and the phone list may be used for temporary sponsorship. Members on this list expect to be called, and know that they may receive a call at any time of the day or night. If it is a "bad time" for them they will tell you, so call another number please. These policies are read once every four weeks at the beginning of the meeting and are voted on once each year, during a group conscience discussing them. Anyone who wants to share in a meeting, in lieu of the group conscience, may do so by moving to our alternate meeting area. A $20.00 donation, for the DR's travel expenses, will be given one month before Spring and Fall Assemblies, if the funds are available. The above policies are used as suggested guidelines; they are not rules. They will be in effect until voted out by the group conscience.
